Question about enlisting in the Navy?
Q-Tip M asked:
I am thinking about enlisting in the Navy but have a few questions. The two careers that intrested me were being a mechanic on an aircraft carier and doing maintnence on aircraft and repairs to the ship, and the other was becoming a minister in the navy and folowing one of the Navys religious careers. Is it possible for me to enlist and go through boot camp and then afterwards choose my career in the Navy? Are these possible career choices for a non-officer?

You can change your rate once you are in but its a major pain and you may have to enlist for more time as a condition. You would have to take a test. I considered going from being a bomb builder to working in the post office. I would have had to re-enlist for another year. I told them to forget it.
Its best to get what you really want in advance.
Also no matter what, don’t be a cook! You will work like a dog and get very little liberty (time off the ship when in port as everyone still has to eat).
Good luck guy! I would say go for the technical ones and if you don’t like it once you are in than go for Chaplin. It should not be hard to get that.
Your friendly neighborhood recruiter should be able to give you better info than me. Ask him.
Before signing up, make sure that you’re fine with being in whatever job the Navy gives you. Even if it isn’t what you want to do - because there are never any guarantees that you’ll get the job you want.
My best friend is getting out of the Navy in a few months, he never got to do what he wanted to do when he enlisted & the recruiter lied to him many times.
You can “Strike” for a rate when you get there but it is tough. You start out at the bottom, and get the crappy hard dirty jobs, You are better off deciding before you go and getting schooling. In subs you get advanced schooling and get to your boat as an E-4. You sit in a class room for two years getting advanced schooling and sub school and get technical skills. And the claustrophobia isn’t as bad as people say, you sometime forget you are submerged. But even if you do go surface get a rating first, you’ll be much happier and better paid.
minimum enlistment for advanced rates is 6 years though
you need a degree to be a chaplain which is a officer however there is a rate (job) religious personel they protect the chaplain
i commend you on your on your choice of jobs the aircraft mechanic you will go to “A”
school after basic training good luck
if that doesn’t work for be a boatswainmate
