What job might my son get in the US Air Force?
Oreo asked:
My son is exploring the idea of joining the US Air Force. He just took the ASVAB and will get the results at the end of this month. He has not met with a recruiter at this point, yet.
I understand that jobs he will be offered are based on ASVAB scores. My son is not a scholar. He’s a below average student but really wants to be an aircraft mechanic or another kind of job where he can use his hands (do repairs, diagnose, etc).
Is there a possibility he could be assigned to his dream job? Is it more about current needs of the USAF regardless of education (ASVAB score)? What might he expect?
Thanks for any and all help.

No acuate advise can really be given to you until his ASVAB results come back! His score will determine everything…he has to score at least 36 to get into the Air Force! From there, he’ll sit down with a recuiter and discuss what he wants to do! From there, he’ll go to MEPS (Military Entrance Processing Station) for a physical and if he passes he’ll then select a few jobs. Depending on the jobs availability, he’ll get a ship date to report to Basic Military Training (BMT). But like I said before, his ASVAB score will determin everything!
Go here for a list of jobs and score requirments, just click on a category:
Don’t know what job is available to him until he gets his ASVAB scores back. Not only that but some jobs have special requirements such as certain vision, hearing, and weight lift limit. He has to score at least a 36 to be qualified to join the AF.
Check out , do a search for AFSC and a list of different AFSC/jobs will pop-up…go through each one and see what he likes. It should tell you what the requirements are too.
Your son does have a choice in getting the job he wants as long as he is qualified for it and he get’s it in writing on his enlistment contract. It’ll be anywhere between 2-8 months wait time once he goes through the process.
GOOD LUCK to him!!!
Ms. Davis gave a great answer. Here is something else to consider. That is whether he can pass the physical. Less than 15% of adult males between 18 and 26 in the U.S. can. The source below is to the medical standards. Check out Chapter Two.
the ASVAB and mediacal will determine his job availability … howver once in he can then attempt to change jobs later after experience and education …. hopefully he does good on the mechanical aspect of the ASVAB …. he can also retake the test several times. and take time to study and prepare.
It’s not really a matter of them “offering” him a job. When he knows what his ASVAB score (and more importantly, the internal “line” scores within the ASVAB) the recruiter will be able to tell him what jobs he qualifies for. From there, it’s really up to your son to choose the job speciality that best suits his likes/dislikes, skills, and aptitudes. He should plan on meeting with a recruiter several times over a period of time. Don’t rush in to anything, and wait for the position he really wants.
My son started working with recruiters his Junior Year in high school… took the ASVAB, and then enlisted via the Delayed Entry Program, to make sure he got the school he wanted.. and the job he wanted… after he graduated. For some jobs, the openings are limited by how many seats they’ve been allotted in a specific school… it pays off to plan ahead and reserve that seat, as soon as he knows what job he wants.
I’m not sure about the Air Force, but I know the Marine Corps will guarantee an Occupational Field… but not a specific job within that field… the job he got depended on his performance in A- and C-schools.
Good luck to you!
i was a below average student and i did great on my ASVAB… no matter what his AFQT score is on his ASVAB is, it doesn’t tell him what jobs he qualifies for, it just tells him if he qualifies for the air force. He needs a 36 (this is actually a percentile score) on his AFQT to pass. The way the air force decides what jobs you qualify is because of a combination of sub test. If he past the prequal test in the recruiters office, most likely he passed the AFQT score required. The subtest i believe are mechanical, electronic, scientific, and some random test where you have to put shapes and stuff together. How he did on those with a combination of how he did on his word knowledge test and math knowledge, and arithmetic test will determine what he qualifies for.
